WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson attended the game between Haley Cavinder and the Miami Hurricanes against the North Carolina Tar Heels at Watsco Center on Sunday. Wilson, the first-ever WNBA 2K cover athlete, sported a moss green t-shirt, a plain silver necklace, and a red bandana.
Wilson also expressed her excitement for the matchup in a recorded video message, saying, “What’s up ya’al, its A’ja Wilson here, here in the game. Just a good game, you got a ranked opponent here. So yeah, I’m loving some good basketball over here.”
Known for her support of women’s basketball, especially at the collegiate level, Wilson, with her history at South Carolina, is a strong Gamecocks supporter. She actively advocates for the visibility and growth of women’s basketball and supports young athletes like Haley Cavinder and Miami to uplift the sport.
Coming off a stellar WNBA season, Wilson averaged 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks, earning her third MVP award in the last five years. She also helped the Las Vegas Aces reach the WNBA conference finals.
Miami falls despite Haley Cavinder’s efforts
North Carolina secured a victory in Coral Gables with a 69-60 win over Miami, despite Haley Cavinder’s impressive performance. Cavinder scored 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting (3-of-7 from the 3-point line) along with 11 rebounds and five assists.
Maria Gakdeng led UNC with 21 points, and Alyssa Ustby added 19, as North Carolina’s defense and ability to protect the ball were key to their victory. The Tar Heels forced 15 turnovers from Miami and held them to their lowest season score.
After the loss, Miami will face Louisville on Jan. 2 as they aim to bounce back from their second defeat of the season.
