A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces are on the verge of another championship after an emphatic 91-78 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday. With this win, the Aces took a 2-0 lead in the 2025 WNBA Finals

Behind another dominant showing from the reigning MVP, the Aces have once again proved why they remain the league’s gold standard.

A’ja Wilson’s Historic First Half

Wilson was unstoppable from the opening tip. She exploded for 20 first-half points, becoming only the third player in WNBA history to record at least 20 points in the first half of a Finals game.

The only other players to achieve that feat are Angel McCoughtry (2011) and Kahleah Copper (2021). As one of the game’s most decorated stars, Wilson joins elite company.

By halftime, the Aces had built a commanding double-digit lead, fueled by Wilson’s efficiency and defensive dominance. She finished with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and three assists, controlling both ends of the floor in vintage fashion.

Her explosive second quarter, where she poured in 13 of her 20 first-half points, broke the Mercury’s rhythm completely. Las Vegas limited Phoenix to just 10 points in that quarter, effectively sealing the tone for the rest of the night.

Wilson Gains Simple but Powerful Tribute

Wilson’s dominance captivated everyone’s attention. From fans to the NBA’s Ja Morant, everyone came together to celebrate this big win for her.

Morant’s tribute was simple yet powerful. In a tweet that instantly went viral, he wrote, “Aja Wilson.”

That was all Morant needed to say. Both Wilson and Morant hail from South Carolina, and the NBA guard has long shown admiration for the Aces’ forward. His post sparked an avalanche of praise on social media, highlighting how Wilson’s performances are transcending the boundaries between men’s and women’s basketball.

Former players, analysts, and fans flooded timelines celebrating her Finals heroics, with many labeling her performance as one of the best in modern WNBA history.

While Wilson was the centerpiece, Jackie Young delivered an incredible 32 points and eight rebounds, including a Finals record 21 points in the third quarter. Chelsea Gray added 10 points and 10 assists, orchestrating the Aces’ offense to perfection.

The Aces’ defensive adjustments, like switching to more zone coverage and aggressive trapping, completely neutralized Phoenix’s top scorers, including Kahleah Copper, who was held to just eight second-half points.

Now, as the series shifts to Phoenix, the Aces stand just two wins away from another championship, and Wilson looks well on her way to cementing her legacy as one of the greatest ever.
