Astros manager Joe Espada gave an update on the injuries of two key players, Kyle Tucker and Justin Verlander. He mentioned that both players are unlikely to return from the IL before the All-Star break, which is disappointing news but not entirely unexpected.
Tucker has been sidelined since June 3 with a right shin contusion and may need a minor league rehab assignment before returning. With the All-Star break approaching and Tucker yet to resume on-field activities, his return before the break seems unlikely. The Astros are focusing on ensuring his health for the remainder of the season rather than rushing his comeback.
Verlander has been out since June 9 with neck discomfort and has not started throwing off a mound yet. While the Astros could use his presence in the rotation, they are prioritizing his long-term health over a quick return in July.
Additionally, it is now highly improbable that Verlander’s conditional $35MM player option for 2025 will be triggered due to his extended absence. Espada also mentioned that rookie Jake Bloss will make a rehab start this weekend and could potentially return to the Astros’ rotation soon after.
In the AL West, Rangers’ Josh Jung is still dealing with discomfort in his wrist after fracturing it in April, delaying his return to the lineup. On the bright side, the Mariners are hopeful that Bryan Woo could make a comeback before the All-Star break after a successful bullpen session and upcoming rehab start.
