The WTA, in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has introduced the PIF WTA Maternity Fund Program, a groundbreaking initiative that provides paid maternity leave and fertility support to WTA players. This is the first time in women’s sports history that comprehensive family-planning benefits are available to professional, self-employed athletes. The initiative ensures that players have better conditions balancing their careers and motherhood, setting a new standard for athlete support.

Victoria Azarenka and her son Leo
Victoria Azarenka, who gave birth to son Leo in 2016, praises the initiative: “Ensuring that programs like this exist has been a personal mission of mine.”

What the program offers

Eligible WTA players will receive:

Up to 12 months of paid maternity leave, with everyone receiving the same amount, irrespective of their ranking.Grants for fertility treatments to support family planning.Access to specialized health support, including physical assessments, mental health resources, and nutritional guidance.

To qualify, players must have participated in at least eight WTA events within the past 12 months or at least 24 events over the past 36 months. Over 320 WTA players are eligible for this initiative, ensuring they do not have to choose between their careers and starting a family. Unlike other financial support programs, players will not have to repay the funds if they decide not to return to competition.

A step towards equality in sports

Balancing a professional tennis career with motherhood has long been a challenge, as female athletes are self-employed and do not receive standard employee benefits. This initiative sets a precedent for other sports organizations to follow, offering long-term career sustainability for women in tennis.

WTA CEO Portia Archer emphasized that this program gives players more control over family planning, removing financial uncertainty. WTA Players’ Council representative Victoria Azarenka, a mother herself, championed this cause, calling it a game-changer for future generations of female athletes.

Expanding family support in tennis

This maternity program builds upon the WTA’s Family Focus Program, which already includes:

Special rankings that allow new mothers to retain their previous ranking for up to three years.Seeding protections, ensuring returning mothers don’t face top-seeded players in early rounds.

Since its introduction in 2019, 50 players have benefited from these ranking protections, making post-pregnancy career continuity smoother.

A global impact on women’s sports

With PIF fully funding this initiative, the WTA is setting a new standard for athlete support. The collaboration reflects the shared vision of PIF and the WTA to promote inclusivity and long-term career stability for women in professional sports.

This initiative not only helps current athletes but also inspires the next generation, proving that professional success and family life can go hand in hand. (sources: WTA, BBC)
