Former WTA world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit recently welcomed her first child, a baby boy named Leon Enzo Lepistu. The Estonian tennis star shared the happy news on Instagram, posting a heartwarming photo of the newborn peacefully sleeping.
In the touching photo, Kontaveit is seen lovingly holding Leon’s head, while the baby grasps onto his father’s finger. The proud mom captioned the picture: “First week with our Leon Enzo Lepistu. So much love.”
Congratulations poured in from many of Kontaveit’s tennis colleagues, such as Ons Jabeur, Sorana Cirstea, Elena Vesnina, Monica Puig, Naomi Broady, and Sabine Lisicki, who also recently became a mother.
The 28-year-old Kontaveit has been in a relationship with Estonian soccer player Brent Lepistu since at least 2022, as seen from her Instagram photos. Lepistu, two years older than Kontaveit, plays as a professional midfielder for Premium Liiga club FCI Levadia. The couple announced their pregnancy in May 2024.
Kontaveit retired from professional tennis in July 2023 after a successful 13-year career on the Hologic WTA Tour, citing lumbar disc degeneration as the reason. Her standout season was in 2021, where she won four titles and made history by qualifying for the WTA Finals as the first Estonian. Throughout her career, she clinched six WTA titles, with her first win at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2017 holding special significance. Notable highlights include reaching the quarterfinals of the 2020 Australian Open.
Aside from her new role as a mother, Kontaveit is teasing an upcoming project—a book set to be published in November 2024. Penned by acclaimed Estonian author and journalist Eia Uus, the memoir will delve into Kontaveit’s journey to tennis stardom, recounting both her successes and obstacles along the way. The book will be released in Estonian, offering fans an intimate look into the life of one of the nation’s top athletes.
