Angel Ayala (18-0, 8 knockouts) was lifted in the air to celebrate his sixth-round knockout of Dave Apolinario (20-1, 14 KOs) in Mexico City on August 9. With this victory, Ayala claimed the vacant IBF flyweight title.
Angel Ayala secured a significant win in his career by capturing the IBF title with a sixth-round knockout victory over Dave Apolinario. Ayala scored two knockdowns in the sixth round, ultimately ending the fight at 2:06 of round six at Restaurante Arroyo in Mexico City.
The win allowed Ayala (18-0, 8 knockouts) to claim the belt previously held by Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs), who had vacated the title earlier in the year.
Ayala’s victory over Apolinario was not an easy task, as the Filipino fighter started strong. However, Ayala’s body punching shifted the momentum in his favor, leading to a convincing win.
In the sixth round, Ayala showcased his versatility by switching between orthodox and southpaw styles, overwhelming Apolinario and securing the knockout victory.
With this win, Ayala solidified his position in the flyweight division and is expected to climb the rankings.
