Angel Reese’s remarkable achievements were highlighted this week. The Chicago Sky forward was named the WNBA Player of the Week on Tuesday, making her the first player from the 2024 WNBA Draft class to receive this honor.
Reese earned this recognition by breaking the league’s consecutive double-double streak, achieving 13 consecutive double-doubles. She also maintained averages of 16.8 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game through Week 7.
Chicago played three games that week, winning 2 out of 3. They defeated the Atlanta Dream 85-77 on Tuesday and the Seattle Storm 88-84 on Friday. However, the Storm retaliated on Sunday, winning 84-71 against the Sky.
In addition to her impressive double-double streak, Reese is also the only rookie averaging a double-double, with 14.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average is currently the highest in the WNBA.
Being the first rookie to receive Player of the Week honors in 2024 is quite an accomplishment given the talent in this year’s rookie class. Reese is competing with players like Caitlin Clark (Indiana Fever), Rickea Jackson (Los Angeles Sparks), teammate Kamilla Cardoso, and others.
Reese was also named the WNBA Rookie of the Month in June, averaging 14.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game for the month. She was also selected as a WNBA All-Star.
Considering her remarkable success so far, it’s surprising that Reese was only the 7th pick in the WNBA Draft in April. Chicago must feel like they struck gold with that selection.
