Angel Reese, the Chicago Sky forward, had her first WNBA season cut short due to a season-ending injury. In Friday’s game against LA, the Rookie of the Year contender fractured her left wrist in the third quarter but still managed to finish with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
“The risk of not having surgery, I could literally have arthritis at 22 years old — that wasn’t an option,” Reese shared with her TikTok followers on Sunday.
While not indicating a specific recovery timeline, Reese expressed her anticipation to participate in Unrivaled’s upcoming season. The 3×3 league’s inaugural competition is set to commence in early 2025.
Reese’s Record-Breaking Rookie Season in WNBA History
Reese made history in her rookie season by setting new WNBA records for consecutive double-doubles and single-season rebounds, showcasing an exceptionally strong rookie year.
“I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol,” Reese shared on Instagram following her injury.
This year’s WNBA rookie class will be remembered as one of the most impactful drafts in history. However, injuries to standout players like Cameron Brink and Reese serve as a reminder of the toll the league’s demanding schedule can take.
Chicago Sky Remain in Playoff Contention Despite Injury
Chicago secured the eighth and final playoff spot over the weekend by defeating LA and Dallas. They now hold a one-game lead over ninth-place Atlanta.
However, the Sky’s battle is far from over. Next up, they will face a determined Washington on Wednesday before a crucial game against Atlanta on September 17th.
In more playoff news, the Sparks and the Wings have been eliminated from postseason contention, guaranteeing both teams lottery picks in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
