Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese, who watched the United States women’s basketball team secure a 67-66 victory over France in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, assumed the role of a general manager after witnessing Seattle Storm forward Gabby Williams nearly lead the host country to victory.
Following the win by Team USA, Reese took to X, formerly Twitter, to try and recruit Williams, who started her WNBA career in Chicago, back to the Sky.
“Ok now that the game is over, would you like to be a part of the Chicago Sky again???” Reese wrote to Williams. “(thought it wouldn’t hurt to try lmaoo).”
Williams, who scored 19 points for France in the loss, responded to Reese with a different suggestion.
Williams, drafted by the Sky in 2018, spent three seasons in Chicago before being traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in May of ’21. Prior to the trade, she was placed on the full-season suspended list by the Sky for not prioritizing the team, according to then-head coach and GM James Wade.
At that time, Williams had commitments to play for France in EuroBasket Women and the Olympics, of which the Sky were reportedly unaware. This led to her missing the entire ’21 season due to suspension.
Williams was eventually traded to the Seattle Storm in February of ’22 and has played 46 games with the team across the ’22 and ’23 seasons.
It appears that Williams still holds some resentment towards the Sky, much to Reese’s disappointment.
Reese even reminded Williams that Wade, who left the Sky for the Toronto Raptors in July of ’23, is no longer affiliated with the organization.
Talk about feeling wanted!
