The WNBA premiered a new documentary series highlighting rookies Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, Rickea Jackson, and Nika Muhl on Wednesday.
Entitled Year 1, the series chronicles the journey of these four up-and-coming stars during their rookie seasons, from the WNBA draft to the playoffs.
The announcement comes at a time when the WNBA’s popularity is on the rise, thanks in part to the emergence of players like Caitlin Clark, Reese, and others who made a name for themselves in college.
Clark’s absence from the documentary is noticeable, considering she is currently one of the most marketable women’s basketball players. It is unclear whether the WNBA approached Clark and she declined to participate.
Reese, who was Clark’s rival in college and now plays for the Chicago Sky, is having an impressive rookie season. She has already broken the WNBA record for consecutive double-doubles in a season with 10, establishing herself as a dominant force in the paint.
Cardoso has been making an impact alongside Reese as a key player for the Sky, averaging 8.3 points and 7.8 rebounds in her rookie year after coming from South Carolina.
Jackson, the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, was originally part of a dynamic duo with Cameron Brink on the Los Angeles Sparks before Brink was sidelined with a torn ACL.
Muhl, a second-round pick from UConn, has faced challenges in getting playing time with the Seattle Storm in her rookie season. Despite this, she has a strong following from her time at UConn and is known as one of the fashion icons of the WNBA.
