Angel Reese’s impressive performance on the court continues to make WNBA history. The Chicago Sky rookie achieved a milestone on Sunday, becoming the quickest player to reach 20 double-doubles in her career.
During Sunday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury, Reese tallied 19 points and 20 rebounds. Despite her efforts, Chicago suffered an 86-68 defeat, bringing their record to 11-16 for the season.
It took Reese just 27 games to achieve 20 career double-doubles. With 13 games remaining in the season, she only needs two more to match the Sky’s single-season record (Slivia Fowles, 2011) and the WNBA rookie record (Tina Charles, 2010).
In the three games Chicago has played since the end of the WNBA’s Olympic break, Reese has delivered a double-double in each. Despite a loss to the Mercury on Thursday, Aug. 15, she managed 11 points and 15 rebounds. In a subsequent victory over the Los Angeles Sparks, Reese recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds.
After the Sky’s loss to the Mercury following the break, Reese was questioned about her record-setting performances in the WNBA. However, the rookie dismissed the topic swiftly, stating, “I don’t want to hear about no record.”
Reese has excelled in her rookie season with Chicago, averaging 13.6 points and a league-leading 12.3 rebounds per game in the first 27 matches. She also holds the record for the most consecutive double-doubles (15) and was honored as the WNBA Rookie of the Month in June.
As Chicago prepares for their upcoming game against the Sun on Friday, Aug. 23, will Reese move closer to breaking the Sky’s single-season double-double record?
