The Chicago Sky and star rookie Angel Reese rolled into the Olympic/All-Star break off the momentum of a fantastic 93-85 road win over the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. But the second half of the season began with a thud as the Phoenix Mercury crushed the host Sky 85-65.
Reese scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds but shot just 4-of-14 from the field and made 3-of-8 free throws. All but one of her field goal misses were from inside the paint.
Chicago as a whole struggled, shooting 37.0 percent from the field and 4-of-19 from three-point range.
Meanwhile, Phoenix roared to a 30-12 lead after the first quarter and a 50-28 halftime edge. Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 29 points, and Brittney Griner scored 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
One game isn’t symbolic of a whole season, of course. The Sky are still comfortably in the playoff picture at 10-15, good enough for eighth place and two-and-a-half games ahead of the ninth-place Atlanta Dream. And Reese continues to be a double-double machine, amassing one in 18 of her last 19 games.
Thursday featured a tough loss, though, with Griner dominating the matchup down low and Reese and the Sky not having an answer for her, Copper or the rest of Phoenix.

Angel Reese is a good player, but that double double streak had a lot of people fooled, she’s not who y’all think she is.Btw chennedy carter is the best player on this team and it shouldn’t even be a debate

Britney Griner is not doing kind things to the Chicago Sky right now.

I couldn’t watch the game today but Angel Reese really needs to work on her inside touch. 4-14 is atrocious.
Josh Casper @metrbocker
Still talking about rookie of the year race? People are gonna say Angel Reese had 11/15. 4-14 great you have a double double.
El Padrino @TheKiddRamos
I like Angel Reese but she was 4/14 and 3/8 from the line and they got smoked. That seemed pretty contained to me https://t.co/uYjU4UrdE2

Angel Reese had eight offensive rebounds, yet only shot 4/14 from the field (39% on the year). This indicates:1) she’s gonna miss the layup, an indictment on her finishing ability 2) defenses aren’t sagging off perimeter shooters when she gets the OREB
Sad sports fan @Blake_tyre1
I love Angel Reese but she didn’t play well tonight even with a double double tn.. https://t.co/w6V2Javblf

Eh, Angel Reese still did what she always does. Double double. 15 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks. 🤷🏾♀️ Like I’ve been saying, we need a point guard and some offensive plays other than getting out the way of 1-2 players running & shooting. That’s why they were lost to begin the game.
2/10 @Taqori__
Whenever Angel Reese have a bad game, y’all go so hard on her. Sheesh.

Chicago Sky and Angel Reese will be fine. 1st game after long break, won’t be surprised if it happens to more teams. Teams with multiple players on the USA team will have an advantage because they in too basketball shape. Other players will need to work themselves back in shape

I love Angel Reese but sis you need an offensively bag overnighted to you on Amazon Prime. You are a great defensive player, but they need you to be great on both ends of the court. #Skytown #wnba
Chicago will now go on a three-game road trip that begins Saturday at the Los Angeles Sparks.
