The Chicago Sky are gearing up for the initial phase of WNBA free agency, commencing Saturday, to mold their offseason roster. With ample cap space and two first-round draft picks, general manager Jeff Pagliocca is in a strong position to make impactful moves to strengthen the team around Angel Reese in her second season.
One intriguing possibility is the potential return of former Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot. Recently, Vandersloot, who secured her second WNBA championship with the New York Liberty last season, expressed her desire for a change. “I want to be valued. I want to be competitive,” Vandersloot stated during Unrivaled media availability day.
The 35-year-old guard further explained: “I want to have the ball in my hands and be able to create the way that I think I can, you know, and just be in a place that is comfortable for me and my family.”
Her remarks follow a reduced role during the Liberty’s playoff stretch, where she did not start any games and played fewer than 10 total minutes. This was a departure from her performance in the regular season, where she started all 31 games.

Could Vandersloot Be a Valuable Addition to the Sky?
Despite being past her prime, Vandersloot, a five-time All-Star, remains one of the league’s top passers and could help address the Sky’s backcourt challenges in the short term. Her veteran leadership and playmaking skills would be crucial during this transitional phase for the franchise.

However, the Sky may not offer her the extended playing time she seeks. Nonetheless, her return could provide both a sentimental and strategic boost as the team rebuilds.
While the Sky need to strengthen their frontcourt behind Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, their main focus will be on the backcourt. In the previous season, the team struggled with ball movement and three-point shooting, resulting in one of the league’s most stagnant offenses. To address these issues, the Sky aim to upgrade their primary ball handler.
Kelsey Plum also emerges as a top target
While Vandersloot is a compelling option, Kelsey Plum is likely the Sky’s top target in this free agency period. Despite being cored by the Las Vegas Aces, Plum is expected to depart from the team.
The Sky could be strong contenders for her talent, especially since head coach Tyler Marsh, who recently transitioned from the Aces as an assistant coach, has a close connection with Plum. As free agency kicks off, fans will be closely monitoring how the Sky shape their roster.
