Anthony Joshua’s upcoming bout with Daniel Dubois on September 21 has the potential to break the British boxing attendance record, as the request to increase the capacity at Wembley Stadium has been approved.
The current record holder for the highest attendance in British boxing is the April 2021 fight between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte, where 94,000 fans gathered at Wembley.
The Riyadh Season event featuring Joshua and Dubois has already sold out after the initial 90,000 tickets were quickly purchased.
A further 6,000 tickets have been approved for sale by Turki Al-Alshikh, potentially allowing for a new record attendance of 96,000 people.
The additional tickets will be available for purchase starting at noon on Friday, as announced by Al-Alshikh. He shared on X: “Our request to expand the capacity for a record-breaking boxing crowd at Wembley Stadium for the Joshua vs. Dubois fight at the #RiyadhSeasonCard Wembley Edition has been granted. Tickets will go on sale on Friday at 12pm UK time.”
The headline fight will mark Dubois’ first defence of his IBF title, which he earned by defeating Filip Hrgovic for the interim belt in Saudi Arabia in June.
Despite Usyk not facing Dubois, the former champion, Dubois is set to face Tyson Fury in a rematch in December.
While Dubois has not previously fought at Wembley Stadium, Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion, has experience fighting under the arch and has achieved victories against top opponents in front of large crowds.
At 34, Joshua holds a record of 28-3 with 25 knockouts and is currently on a winning streak after his most recent loss to Oleksandr Usyk in August 2022.
Meanwhile, Dubois, with a record of 21-2, is in prime form following consecutive wins against strong opponents since his defeat to Usyk in August 2023.
