The Portland Fire announced on Tuesday that they have named Ashley Battle as Vice President of Basketball Operations, Strategy, and Innovation.

She will oversee basketball operations, including building the Fire’s roster and finding talent, while applying innovative strategies across player performance and analytics.

“It’s exciting to be part of a franchise that’s reimagining what player development and team culture can look like,” Battle said in a press release. “Having been in the players’ shoes, I know how powerful it is when an organization invests in every aspect of an athlete’s growth. The Fire is building something special, and I’m proud to now be contributing to that vision.”

Battle spent the last four years with the Boston Celtics as a scout, during which the team won the 2024 NBA Championship.  She also served as an assistant general manager for the NBA G League team, the Maine Celtics.

“I’m looking forward in coming back into the W and to an organization that prioritizes innovation and the growth of women’s sports,” Battle told Ballislife.com.

She also provided color commentary for Connecticut Sun and New York Liberty games, sharing her insights and expertise during broadcasts.

Battle’s Playing Career and WNBA Journey

Throughout her collegiate career, Battle was part of the UConn Huskies dynasty that won three consecutive championships from 2002 to 2004, playing alongside legends such as Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi.

At Storrs, Conn., Battle dominated on the defensive end, earning Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior.

Battle was selected No. 25 overall in the 2005 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm and played six seasons with three teams. After her playing career, she held roles with Nike, the NBA, the WNBA, and Barnum Financial Group. The former UConn star earned an MBA in sports management from Drexel University in 2013.

In August, the Fire hired Vanja Černivec as the team’s general manager.  She previously served as VP of Basketball Operations for the Valkyries. In her new role, Battle will report directly to Černivec.

“Ashley’s multi-dimensional experience uniquely positions her to help the Portland Fire build a modern, holistic women’s basketball organization,” Černivec said. “Her insight as a former player will be especially invaluable from day one as we shape the future of this team.”

Portland Fire Strengthens Front Office with Battle, Černivec

During the 2025 season, the Golden State Valkyries established themselves as a model expansion team, securing a playoff spot and setting a new record for most wins by an expansion team in its first season.

Before Game 1 of the 2025 WNBA Finals, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told reporters that the expansion drafts for the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo will not take place until CBA negotiations are complete.

The Valkyries’ expansion draft took place in early December of last year, just two months before free agency began.

As Portland shifts focus to hiring its first head coach in franchise history, the additions of Battle and Černivec are expected to strengthen the front office and help select the right players to build the team’s culture.

More importantly, with Battle’s vision for women’s basketball and her business experience in the NBA, Portland’s front office is in good hands!
