Despite facing challenges in the 2024 season, Fernando Alonso remains undeterred by Aston Martin F1’s current struggles, choosing instead to focus on the bright future he envisions for the Silverstone-based team.
Alonso, a seasoned Formula 1 veteran with over two decades of experience, has experienced the highs and lows of the sport throughout his career.
In 2023, Alonso and Aston Martin had a strong start to the season, earning six podium finishes in the first eight races. However, as the season progressed, the team’s performance declined, causing them to slip in the rankings. Despite these setbacks, Alonso remains committed to Aston’s project and goals, especially with the upcoming significant changes in F1 regulations in 2026.
Alonso acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about the team’s future.
“I’m enjoying the journey,” Alonso stated. “We want to be champions and competitive next year, along with seizing the opportunity in 2026. It’s not a time for frustration but for embracing the process of becoming a top team.”
Alonso’s confidence is well-founded as Aston Martin is making significant investments in its infrastructure, including a new wind tunnel and simulator. The team’s partnership with Honda as an engine supplier and collaboration with Aramco on sustainable fuels positions them as key players in the upcoming power unit era.
With the recruitment of Enrico Cardile as Chief Technical Officer and the potential addition of Adrian Newey, Aston Martin’s determination to compete at the front is evident. Alonso sees this as an exciting opportunity as he is part of the team’s evolution with a multi-year contract.
Despite the current standings with Alonso in ninth place and Aston Martin in fifth in the Constructors’ championship, well behind fourth-placed Mercedes, Alonso remains philosophical about the team’s position in the midfield.
Alonso recognizes that true competition and challenges in F1 lie at the top of the sport, and he remains focused on Aston Martin’s journey to success.
“At the end of the day, we are not satisfied with our current position,” he said. “But in the end, only one person will be truly happy in December. That’s the nature of the sport, and we must embrace it.”
