The Los Angeles Dodgers activated catcher Austin Barnes from the 10-day injured list and optioned Hunter Feduccia back to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday afternoon before the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles at Dodger Stadium.
Barnes had a rough outing on Aug. 19 when he was hit on the toe by a foul ball that resulted in a fracture. He missed eight games.
At the time, manager Dave Roberts didn’t think Barnes would need more than a 10-day IL stint to recover. Barnes was batting .241 with a .318 OBP when he landed on the IL.
Since the start of July, he is batting .296 with a .367 OBP in 18 games.
He has spent 10 seasons with the team, hitting 35 home runs and driving in 157 runs over 589 career games. Originally, he was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the ninth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University.
The 34-year-old has played in 34 games for the Dodgers this season. He’s catching Bobby Miller and batting ninth against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
The 27-year-old backstop, Feduccia, notched his first career hit on Sunday afternoon and went 1-for-2 with a walk in his second stint with the Dodgers. Overall, he is 1-for-3 in two games played for the club.
Feduccia earned his first career start on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays with Gavin Stone on the mound. The battery was together for several years in the minor leagues.
“It’s awesome,” Stone said after Feduccia’s big day. “He’s one of my best friends in this organization, has been for a while. Just to be a part of his special day is pretty cool.”
He returns to Oklahoma City, where he has played 73 games this season, posting a .282 batting average with six home runs and 46 runs batted in. Over six seasons with the organization, he has hit .267 with 46 home runs and 252 RBIs across 438 minor league games. The catcher was selected in the 12th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Louisiana State University.
