Azzi Fudd Has 3-Word Response to Potential Paige Bueckers Reunion in WNBA

The UConn Lady Huskies are rolling through another March Madness, thanks to impressive performances from their star players, Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd, both of whom are expected to be future WNBA Draft picks.

Fudd will be the next great UConn player to leave the team for the professional league, following in the footsteps of heralded college basketball star Paige Bueckers. She was the No. 1 pick for the Dallas Wings in last year’s draft, and immediately began showing the league why she’s such a special player.

While Bueckers had a quick impact on the Wings, it wasn’t enough to bring them playoff success in her first season. However, that could dramatically change for next season, since Dallas, 10-34 last season, once again holds the No. 1 pick in April’s WNBA Draft.

Many believe that Fudd will follow in Bueckers’ footsteps as the first overall pick, which would also mean she reunites with her former UConn teammate and girlfriend as a member of the Wings’ roster.

That would create a powerful lineup featuring two stellar players who advanced their skills under the leadership and mentorship of the great Geno Auriemma.

And with their consecutive blowout wins over UTSA and Syracuse, the Lady Huskies traveled from Storrs, Connecticut, to Fort Worth, Texas, the host site for their region.

Ahead of UConn’s next game, against No. 4 seed North Carolina, Fudd spoke about how it’s been so far in Texas for her and the team.

“Fort Worth has been good to us so far. The weather has been really nice, so it’s been great to be down here,” she said, smiling.

She was then asked if she could see herself being in Texas, alluding to her potentially landing with the Wings in next month’s draft.

“I mean, maybe,” Fudd said, giggling, suggesting she was interested in the idea.

Bueckers and Fudd helped spark UConn to several NCAA Tournament runs and last year’s championship season. The latter still has business at hand, as she, Auriemma, and the Lady Huskies look to potentially repeat.

Each round gets more difficult with the opposition seemingly getting tougher, but UConn is still a nearly 30-point favorite to beat the Tar Heels on Friday night. A win over North Carolina would mean playing either No. 2 seed Vanderbilt or No. 6 seed Notre Dame, before moving on to the Elite Eight.

The WNBA will hold its next draft on April 13, and there are some debates about who the top pick will be. Along with Fudd, there is also center Awa Fam from Valencia, Spain, who is considered a potential pick for Dallas to select should they want to add size to their frontcourt.

However, it’s hard to argue against adding skilled, winning players who have emerged from UConn’s basketball teams, or against the strong chemistry that Bueckers and Fudd would bring as teammates.

One consideration is their relationship, which could create issues should things not work out between them. As of last July, Bueckers referred to Fudd as her girlfriend, and there’s been no recent indication they’ve split, so it still could be a winning pick if Dallas makes the move.
