Scottish Women’s Football is excited to announce that the Championship and League One will receive unprecedented funding after becoming part of the Barclays Football family.
Barclays was the first title sponsor of the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship in England, and now they are also the inaugural title sponsor of the Barclays Scottish Women’s Championship and Barclay’s Scottish Women’s League One in Scotland.
These leagues serve as the link between local grassroots football and the Scottish Women’s Premier League, with the top regional teams moving up to League One and the top two Championship teams having the chance to join the SWPL through promotion and play-offs.
With teams stretching from Queen of the South in Dumfries to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Highlands, the leagues have a significant geographical reach.
This new partnership extends Barclays’ groundbreaking support for women’s football into Scotland for a three-year period, showcasing the bank’s dedication to football at all levels.
Scottish Women’s Football CEO Aileen Campbell expressed her excitement: “Barclays has been a key player in the advancement of women’s football in England, so we are thrilled to have their support in Scotland as well, especially in developing the pyramid structure here.”
“The Championship and League One have been elevated to national status to keep pace with the remarkable growth of women’s football in Scotland, aiming to raise the quality of grassroots football and create a pathway for clubs to reach the Premier Leagues,” she added.
Tom Corbett, Head of Sponsorship, commented: “Barclays has a longstanding relationship with football and this partnership with Scottish Women’s Football marks another significant milestone in our support for football across the UK.”
Koral Anderson, Head of Transformation for Barclays UK and Scotland Site Lead, said: “As a leading financial services company in Scotland, we are proud to extend our football sponsorship to benefit the local communities and promote gender diversity in the game.”
To celebrate the new partnership and kick off the new season on Sunday 11 August, representatives from Scottish Women’s Football and Barclays, alongside players from the 23 competing teams in the Championship and League One, gathered at Barclays’ new campus on the banks of the Clyde.
