Mayssa Bastos ensured that ONE Fight Night 24 was a night to remember in Bangkok, Thailand. The Brazilian further solidified her legacy by winning the ONE Atomweight Submission Grappling World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Danielle Kelly. After the event, Bastos spoke to the media and basked in her triumph.
“It feels amazing. Right now, it’s hard to put into words, but I am extremely happy. It’s special because I am the first Brazilian to ever win [submission grappling gold], especially since it was a title I had not yet achieved, and it adds to my legacy,” Bastos shared.
Leading up to the match, both fighters promised to be aggressive, and they delivered as soon as the fight started. Despite a strong start from Kelly, Bastos was able to make a crucial catch late in the round, which she believed was the turning point in the match.
“I believe my final catch was the game-changer. If we had a little more time, I could have finished her,” Bastos explained.
Now with the title, Bastos is ready to take on any challenger in the atomweight division. While Kelly may be seeking a rematch, Bastos is open to facing anyone who is willing to challenge her for the title.
“I don’t have a specific opponent in mind right now, but I am willing to fight anyone who steps up,” Bastos stated.
Receiving a performance bonus of $50,000 after her victory was a pleasant surprise for Bastos, adding to the significance of her accomplishment in starting the Bastos Era in ONE Championship.
“I was pleasantly surprised to receive the bonus. It was unexpected but a very welcome surprise,” the Brazilian said.
