Caitlin Clark has recently faced criticism, but political commentator Ben Shapiro has come to her defense. In response to Sheila Johnson, co-owner of the Washington Mystics, suggesting that TIME magazine should have recognized the entire WNBA instead of just Clark, Shapiro stated:
“You’re not putting the entire WNBA on the cover because not everybody can fit. And nobody knows who any of these people are,” said Shapiro.
Shapiro pointed out Clark’s impact on the Mystics and their ticket sales, with 31% of sales reportedly coming from games featuring her. Two games between the Mystics and the Fever drew significant crowds, where Clark’s performance played a key role in attracting fans.
While Johnson downplayed Clark’s impact, a report by Tom Friend of Sports Business Journal suggests that the Indiana Pacers executives admire the Fever’s success and view them as a model to emulate. Clark’s influence on women’s athletics has been recognized, leading to her being named the 2024 Best Sports Business Athlete by SBJ.
