Caitlin Clark was a standout player for the Iowa Hawkeyes, but her transition to the WNBA has not been as smooth as many anticipated. Despite initial struggles, she has started to find her groove in the league. However, her statistics are not as impressive as they were in college, prompting her former teammate Kate Martin to weigh in on the matter.
In an interview on the Taco-Bout Network, Martin, now a star for the Las Vegas Aces, discussed the differences between NCAA and WNBA basketball. She emphasized the physicality and fast pace of the professional league, noting that adjustments are necessary for success. Martin reflected on her own experience and stated,
“I drove more in college… Now, everybody is my size, and like faster. That’s also one of the differences, is like bigger, faster, stronger. You have to learn and adjust. Like, any new job, new whatever you’re going into, right?… That’s how it was my freshman year of college… That’s how it is. Like your freshman year of high school too. It’s just like learning, growing pains.”
Standing at 6 feet tall, Martin acknowledges that she isn’t the most physically dominant guard in the WNBA. She also had to adapt to the faster pace of the professional league, a challenge that Clark is currently facing as well.
Clark has expressed the challenge of adjusting to the quicker pace of the WNBA compared to college basketball. The difference in shot clocks has been particularly noticeable for her, as she discussed in an interview in April,
“It’s fast, fast shot clock, but I think all of you know that’s how I like to play. So, I think it suits my game pretty well. It’s a fast pace, a lot faster than college, and you’ve to learn quicker.”
While Clark was thrust into a leadership role in the WNBA, Martin joined a championship-winning team and had more time to adjust to the professional level. Despite reduced playing time, Martin is expected to play a key role for the Aces in the future as she continues to learn and develop.
Although her minutes on the court have decreased significantly from her college days, Martin remains focused on improving and contributing to her team. Her journey in the WNBA is a learning experience as she navigates the demands of professional basketball.
