Left-hander Blake Snell has opted out of his contract and is now a free agent. The news was reported by Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.
This move does not come as a surprise, as Snell was a free agent last year but did not find the contract he desired, despite his outstanding performance in 2023 when he won the Cy Young award.
Last year, Snell signed a two-year deal with the Giants worth $62 million, including a $15 million salary and a $17 million signing bonus for 2024, with a $30 million salary for 2025 if he stayed with the team.
The opt-out clause after the first year was included to give Snell the opportunity to test free agency again if he had a successful season in 2024.
Although he faced some challenges early in the season, including injuries, Snell returned to form and finished the year strongly with a 1.23 ERA in his final 14 starts.
Despite some injury setbacks over the years, Snell has consistently performed as one of the top pitchers in the league. His impressive statistics from 2018 to present day place him among the top pitchers in terms of ERA and strikeout rate.
With his elite performance, it was expected that Snell would explore free agency once again to seek a more lucrative contract. He will now join other top pitchers in the market such as Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, and Jack Flaherty.
While Snell is leaving behind $30 million, it is anticipated that he will secure a significant new deal in free agency.
