The Los Angeles Dodgers are still searching for relief help, and CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicts that they will make a big move by signing All-Star free agent Tanner Scott this offseason.
This prediction seems likely as the Dodgers have shown they are willing to spend for top talent, and have not acquired much relief pitching this offseason.
After missing out on Devin Williams, who was acquired by the New York Yankees, Anderson believes that the bidding war for Scott will come down to the Dodgers, who have a strong track record in such situations.
Anderson’s prediction is supported by the Dodgers’ history of using deferred money in contracts, allowing them to make more financially prudent moves in the present.
Scott had a strong 2024 season, posting a 1.75 ERA, 22 saves, and 84 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched while playing for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
His impressive numbers are expected to make him one of the highest-paid relievers in the league.
Tim Britton projected a four-year, $64 million deal for Scott, but more recent reports suggest he is seeking a four-year, $80 million deal.
Despite paying over $103 million in luxury taxes last year, the Dodgers have found success with deferred money, including in the recent signing of Teoscar Hernández.
If Scott signs with the Dodgers and includes deferred money in his deal, he would join a roster that already includes several players with over $20 million in deferred money.
With Scott’s strong performance and the Dodgers’ willingness to pay for talent, it seems like a perfect fit for both parties.
