The Blue Jays have designated reliever Brett de Geus for assignment, according to the MLB.com transaction log. This move was necessary to open up a spot on the 40-man roster after the signing of Jeff Hoffman.
de Geus joined the Blue Jays late in the season through a waiver claim from Miami. In his two appearances with Toronto, the 27-year-old right-hander allowed four runs in 2 1/3 innings. Prior to joining the Blue Jays, de Geus had brief stints with the Mariners and Marlins, finishing the season with 11 1/3 innings pitched and allowing 10 runs (nine earned) while recording seven strikeouts and four walks.
This season marked de Geus’ return to the MLB since his rookie year in 2021, where he pitched 50 innings as a Rule 5 pick but struggled with an earned run average over seven. In his career, de Geus has a 7.48 ERA in 61 1/3 big league innings and a 5.31 ERA in 39 Triple-A innings last season. He has a below-average strikeout rate of 15.6% and a decent walk percentage of 8.1%.
The Blue Jays are expected to place de Geus on waivers in the coming days. He has been outrighted before, which would allow him to become a minor league free agent if he goes unclaimed.
