Keyshawn Davis vs Edwin De Los Santos will headline a Top Rank card at the Scope Arena, Norfolk, with Davis set to defend his WBO lightweight title. “The Businessman” missed weight ahead of the fight, and has been stripped of his WBO title, prompting heavy criticism, including from his promoter Bob Arum.
Keyshawn Davis vs Edwin De Los Santos Weight Drama
Bob Arum Blasts Davis After Weight Miss
Davis lost his WBO lightweight crown on the scales, weighing 139.3 pounds, a shocking 4.3 pounds over the 135-pound limit for the lightweight division. His opponent weighed in at 134.7 pounds.
The former WBO champ reacted at the time and said: “I outgrew the weight,” Davis said. “I been making this weight for over four years now. I just outgrew the weight. I tried. I was up late last night. I woke up early this morning, trying to make the weight. I just outgrew the weight, man. I was feeling it the last time I was fighting [Denys] Berinchyk. I thank God that I made it. Y’all don’t know how I was feeling making it. But hey, it is what it is.”
Arum Provides Update
He has been widely criticised, but the biggest criticism came from his own promoter who gave his honest reaction to Dan Rafael from Fight Freaks Unite: “You can tell if a guy is trying to make weight & just can’t. You can see that he’s dehydrated. That wasn’t the case with Keyshawn. He never really tried to make 135. That’s my view of what happened.”
The brutal words did not stop there and Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter for De Los Santos said to Rafael: “We are still waiting for a negotiation. We’ll see what happens. In this moment, there is no fight. (Davis) is irresponsible. He’s a notprofessional.”
It remains to be seen if Keyshawn Davis vs Edwin De Los Santos will go ahead, but it’s clear the criticism of Davis will continue, with plenty of questions asked.
