Legendary engineer and car designer Bob Riley, known for his work in IndyCar and sports car racing, has passed away at the age of 93. Throughout his career, Riley left a lasting impact on the motorsports world with creations such as the Coyote Indy cars for A.J. Foyt, front-engine Mustang GTPs, the high-downforce Intrepid RM-1, the Riley & Scott Trans Am cars and Mk III prototype, and the Riley Daytona Prototype chassis.
Inducted into the IMSA Hall of Fame in 2024 and a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, Riley’s expertise as an engineer and designer spanned across various racing disciplines. He began his career in the aircraft industry and Chrysler’s Space Division Saturn rocket program before transitioning to building race cars, with notable works including the Lynx Formula Vee.
Riley’s contributions to motorsports included work on the Le Mans-winning Ford GT MK IV program while at Ford, followed by designing Coyote Indy car chassis for A.J. Foyt, leading to Foyt’s fourth Indianapolis 500 victory. His innovative designs, like the 1981 Coyote Indy car with ground-effects, showcased his engineering prowess in creating high-performance race cars.
In sports car racing, Riley’s creations like the front-engine Ford Mustang GTP and the Intrepid RM-1, known for their exceptional downforce and cornering speed, made significant impacts on the racing scene. His company, Riley & Scott, produced successful cars like the Mk III prototype and the Mk III World Sports Car, dominating championships and endurance races.
Riley’s legacy also includes the development of successful race cars like the Riley Mk XI, which achieved ten Daytona 24 Hours victories with various teams and powertrains. His involvement in designing cars for series like ALMS and IMSA GTLM, as well as the Viper GT3-R and SpeedSource RX-7s, further solidified his reputation as a pioneering race car designer.
