Kazakhstan is home to famous boxing and fighting icons like Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin and Shavkat Rakhmonov. The country is known for its rich culture and heritage, producing some of the toughest and fiercest warriors on the global fighting stage. Because of this, Kazakh fighters are widely known as great competitors, finishing their opponents while hunting them down in the arena. In this article, we will talk about Kazakhstan’s style of boxing.

Kazakhstan’s Boxing History

Recently, Kazakhstan’s boxing style has become popular all over the country and the globe. Because of the country’s history, the Kazakh boxing style is heavily influenced by the Soviet style. Its training includes a lot of footwork, with boxers moving as fluidly as dancers, giving them the ability to constantly keep pressure on their opponent even when moving forward and backward.

Kazakh boxers are determined to use their environment as part of their rigorous training, as Kazakhstan is surrounded by mountains. This means that Kazakh boxers build their stamina and strength by working out in nature, doing hill sprints, lifting stones as part of their weight conditioning, and doing bodyweight exercises, partnered with nutritious and freshly cooked meals.

Kazakhstan has won seven gold medals, eight silver medals, and eleven bronze medals in the Olympic Games. Due to their fluidity in the ring and successful performances in the Olympic Games and professional boxing circuit, many aspiring boxers and fight fans can’t help but admire and further study Kazakhstan’s boxing style.

The Kazakh Style Of Boxing

The Kazakh style combines technical abilities, agility to move around the ring, and strength with punching precision. Both in amateur and professional bouts, the Kazakh style showcases techniques from old-school fundamentals partnered with difficult training sessions and a tactical approach to fighting. This means having discipline in the ring, allowing boxers to tear their opponents apart without dropping their guard for counterattacks.

According to Janibek “Qazaq Style” Alimkhanuly, a Kazakh professional boxer who is the current WBO and IBF middleweight World Champion and former World and Asian Championship gold medalist, the Qazaq style of boxing uses four different styles in every corner of the ring. This means that a boxer using this style can box at close range, fight while moving forward and backward, and have the punching ability to set up powerful shots with the jab while still being prepared for counterpunching at any time.

Let’s learn more about the fighting style below.

Fighting Stance And Movements

Kazakh boxers are trained to maintain a good stance and keep their movements agile on their feet. Their superior footwork allows them to create angles and move with fluidity, preparing them to counterattack with the openings presented as they adapt to their opponent’s fighting style. They have an upright and relaxed posture, prepared to rain down striking combinations, launch a counterpunch, and pivot around the ring.

Their smooth footwork allows them to swiftly transition from offense to defense should the opponent press forward. This allows them to take control of the ring, forcing the opponent to play on their rhythm, moving in and out of danger.

Jabs, Feints, And Combinations

Whether you’re a southpaw or orthodox, Kazakh boxers know how to keep their lead hand active while moving side to side, forward and backward, and creating angles. When watching the Kazakh style, expect accurate and powerful jabs with well-timed punching combinations in the quest to finesse and outbox their opponents in the ring.

Combination and counterpunching are like a form of art in the Kazakh style. They do this by setting up the distance with their lead hand and then throwing combination sequences with accuracy and power. Doing so overwhelms the opponent’s defense, making it difficult for them to predict the pattern and counter the next move. This keeps the opponent busy defending instead of setting up their attacks and taking control of the ring.

The Kazakh style of boxing throws calculated punches with a game plan, transforming its practitioners into strategists inside the ring. Most of all, their excellent conditioning allows them to move around while being able to throw punches without gassing out.

Boxing Defense

The Kazakh style of defense involves not just moving in and out or around the opponent but also creating openings for counterpunches while keeping their defense up by protecting their face and body. Using their active lead hand to keep the opponent occupied, Kazakh boxers are able to parry punches, enabling them to anticipate their opponent’s reaction and giving them the ability to deflect and block attacks.

This, in turn, may frustrate the opponent, opening them up for counterattacks. Additionally, Kazakh boxers’ high boxing IQ allows them to adapt their guard based on the opponent’s fighting style. Typically, they keep a high guard, which helps them block and shield against punches.

Fight IQ

Gennady Golovkin or ‘GGG’, is one of the most well-known boxers to showcase the Kazakh style of boxing, combining relentless pressure with high fight IQ.

Kazakh boxers usually have a high fighting IQ that allows them to adapt based on their opponent’s fighting style inside the ring. The Kazakh style enables fighters to change their approach every round to set their own pace and disrupt the opponent’s rhythm. This allows them to win most of the rounds as they adjust depending on what is needed to win the fight.

Because of this, the Kazakh style enables boxers to wear down and dismantle their opponents tactically throughout the rounds. Ultimately, it allows Kazakh boxers to showcase their physicality and technical ability in the ring, winning their matches by finesse, mixing old-school and modern training methods, and showcasing a blend of different styles to the world.

Conclusion

The Kazakhstan boxing style relies on a deep understanding of the sport, building a foundation of discipline, physical prowess, and technical abilities. This style meets the opponent with grit and precision, adapting to different fighting styles and showing the world the result of world-class techniques. If you’re a boxer or starting your journey into the sport, you can try out this style of boxing, rich in heritage, and incorporate some of its principles into your training.
