Trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis expressed his frustration in an interview, calling out the 147-lb champions for refusing to fight his son, IBF welterweight champ Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, in a unification match. Bozy is eager for Jaron to secure the three titles needed to become an undisputed champion at 147 before considering a move to 154.
The champions are hesitant to accept the payment offered by Ennis’ promoter for a risky fight they could lose. Bozy places blame on the promoter for the lack of progress in making these fights happen.
Instead of a unification bout, Boots will defend his IBF title against mandatory challenger Karen Chukhadzhian in a rematch on November 9th at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
During an interview with Fight Hub TV, Bozy commented on the upcoming fight, comparing Chukhadzhian to WBC super flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
Reflecting on Boots’ previous match with Chukhadzhian, Bozy acknowledged the need for improvement in cutting off the ring and strategic fighting.
While Boots was required to take the rematch with Chukhadzhian due to IBF regulations, Bozy expressed reluctance and emphasized the need for a different outcome this time.
Boots could have opted to vacate his IBF title and move up to 154 instead of facing Chukhadzhian. Bozy believes that a change in strategy is necessary for Boots to succeed in this upcoming bout.
Bozy also called out the welterweight division for their reluctance to fight Boots, pointing out the lack of compelling offers from his promoter, Eddie Hearn.
Looking ahead, Bozy expressed plans for Boots to move up in weight classes and challenge champions in higher divisions.
Considering the challenges in arranging unification fights at welterweight, Bozy hinted at a potential move to 154 for Boots’ future career.
Boots’ success at higher weight classes will depend on improving his skills and adapting to new competition.
Reflecting on recent championship fights, Bozy shared his predictions for upcoming rematches and anticipated outcomes.
As the boxing landscape evolves, Bozy sees potential for intriguing matchups and future opportunities for Boots to shine.
