Marta Xargay, the wife of New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, took to social media to share highlights from the past year, 2024. The couple had a remarkable year and are eagerly anticipating 2025. They have been married since 2021 and have two children together.
In an Instagram post, Xargay created a compilation of reels and images from the previous year to showcase the events in their lives. The montage included Stewart’s first WNBA championship with the Liberty and her third Olympic gold medal.
The montage also featured their two children, Ruby Mae and Theo, alongside family members and close friends from the WNBA like Sue Bird. It was a significant year for the couple, who have been in a relationship since 2018.
“2024 thank you for everything, the good and the bad. 2025 I’m looking forward to you,” Xargay wrote.
Despite the positive experiences in 2024, Breanna Stewart and Marta Xargay also faced challenges. One of the most troubling incidents occurred during the 2024 WNBA Finals between the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx.
According to ESPN, Xargay received threatening emails and messages after the Liberty lost Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, containing anti-LGBT comments. The couple reported the incidents to authorities, with Stewart reaching out to the league and players’ union, while Xargay filed a police report.
“Myself and my family, we’re definitely doing OK,” Stewart said. “We’re taking the proper precautions… I think that for Marta, especially, I think it was, it is, terrifying… We just want to make sure, obviously, myself and Marta are OK, but our kids are the ones that are the safest.”
Fortunately, the family remained safe, and the Liberty went on to win their first WNBA championship. It marked Stewart’s third title, having won two with the Seattle Storm.
Breanna Stewart to play in Unrivaled
During the offseason, most WNBA players head overseas to play basketball for better contracts, sparking conversations about the league’s compensation. However, Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier introduced a new option by establishing Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 league set to launch on Jan. 17 in Miami, Florida. The league offers competitive salaries through various investments and has signed 36 players across six teams.
Stewart was drafted by Mist BC and will be playing under coach Phil Handy, alongside teammates Jewell Loyd, Courtney Vandersloot, DiJonai Carrington, Rickea Jackson, and Aaliyah Edwards.
