With the upcoming “Unrivaled” league set to kick off later this month, a seasoned WNBA All-Star believes it has the potential to bring about change in women’s basketball.
Brittney Griner, a standout player for the Phoenix Mercury, is among the 36 WNBA athletes heading to Miami for the 3-on-3 league, which she described as offering a fresh perspective on the game in a recent interview with ESPN.
“[Unrivaled] is introducing something new to women’s basketball,” Griner shared. “They are aiming to provide a different look and feel. By bringing everyone together in one place, they are making a significant effort. Unrivaled is demonstrating that it is possible to efficiently pool resources together to deliver a high-quality product.”

The WNBA experienced a notable increase in viewership and attendance, largely attributed to Caitlin Clark. Despite Clark’s impact, it has been a long journey for WNBA players advocating for more rights.
During the last season, teams were provided with chartered flights for the first time, yet the average salary remains slightly below $150,000 (Clark’s salary was $86,000, but she earned millions from endorsements).
Reports indicate that Unrivaled players will earn over $220,000 for their involvement, and the season will span just two months.

“Hopefully, it helps the [WNBA] attract more viewers and [corporate] partners. It will certainly push the [WNBA] to improve,” Griner remarked.
Griner’s teammate from the Mercury, Kahleah Cooper, echoed her sentiments.
“I believe it does add pressure. It has been remarkable,” Cooper stated. “I appreciate the efforts to push for what we deserve and what we are striving for.”
Clark will not be joining the league as she has not had a significant break from basketball since before her senior year at Iowa in late 2023.
