The San Francisco 49ers will have a lot to evaluate this offseason if they’re to win their first Super Bowl since 1994 after losing to the Seattle Seahawks 41-6.
Despite the disappointment of the blowout loss, quarterback Brock Purdy was optimistic.
For Brock Purdy to be right, the 49ers need to re-evaluate their entire roster
Kyle Shanahan has been the 49ers’ head coach for nine years (2017-present), going 82-67 while losing two Super Bowls (2019 & 2023) and two Conference championships (2021 & 2022). With nothing seeming to give in nearly a decade as the 49ers’ head coach, something needs to change to get the 49ers over the hump.
One change the 49ers could look to make is to upgrade at the wide receiver position after running back Christian McCaffery was both their leading rusher (1,202 yards) and receiver (924 yards). Wide receiver Jauan Jennings lagged behind McCaffery in receiving by 281 yards (643).
Such a workload may be untenable for McCaffrey moving forward.
Another could be finding an elite pass rusher to get after the quarterback, as the 49ers were 25th in passing defense (232.4 yards). Their two sack leaders, defensive ends Clelin Ferrell (four) and Bryce Huff (four), had zero in the loss to the Seahawks and accounted for just three tackles combined.
