Bulldogs Fall to Georgetown 62-58 in First Round of BIG EAST Tournament

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Butler fell to the Georgetown Hoyas 62-58 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Anna Wypych led Butler with 18 points in the contest. With the loss, Butler finishes the season with a 12-19 record.

BULLDOG HIGHLIGHTS

Wypych led a duo of Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor. The freshman added two rebounds and an assist to her stat line.
Mallory Miller chipped in 15 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Miller added six rebounds, two assists and a steal in the contest.
Saniya Jackson led the squad on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds. She also paced the offense, dishing out six assists in the game.
Butler shot 19-for-45 (42.2%) from the field and shot 9-for-19 (47.4%) from beyond the arc.
BU tallied 16 assists in the game.

GEORGETOWN HIGHLIGHTS

Laila Jewett led a trio of Hoyas in double figures, pouring in a game-high 19 points on 5-for-12 shooting. Jewett added two rebounds, an assist and two steals to her stat line.
Brianna Scott and Chet Nweke rounded out the Hoyas in double figures with 10 points apiece.
Scott led Georgetown on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds.
Georgetown shot 25-for-68 (36.8%) from the floor and shot 4-for-23 (17.4%) from behind the arc.
GU outrebounded Butler 37-31.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both sides traded buckets early in the contest as the score was even at 7-7 at the first media timeout. Butler came out of the timeout and went on a 7-2 run behind back-to-back buckets from Miller as the Dawgs held a 14-9 advantage with under two minutes left in the frame. Butler closed the quarter with a 17-11 advantage courtesy of a buzzer-beater 3-pointer from Nevaeh Jackson.
Georgetown opened the second on a 7-2 run that was halted by a deep 3-pointer from Wypych. Both sides continued to trade buckets, but another buzzer-beater 3-pointer from Dotsey gave BU the 30-23 advantage heading into the break.
The Hoyas opened the second half on a 7-2 run, cutting the Butler advantage to two (32-30). Georgetown was able to take its first lead of the game (36-34) at the 4:30 mark of the third quarter. The Georgetown lead grew to as many as six (42-36), but the Dawgs continued to keep it close with two free throws from Miller and Langham. Georgetown took the narrow 44-42 lead into the final quarter of action.
Georgetown put together a 6-2 run to start the fourth as the Hoya lead grew to six once again (50-44). Butler was able to cut the deficit to three with just over three minutes left in the quarter (54-51). The Dawgs were unable to even the score in the final minutes of the contest as Georgetown secured the 62-58 victory at the final whistle.
