Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark made history in the WNBA on Sunday by becoming the quickest player to reach 300 career assists in her team’s 104-100 overtime victory against the Atlanta Dream.
The 22-year-old scored 26 points, dished out 12 assists, and grabbed five rebounds in the Fever’s comeback win, securing her 14th double-double of the season, a franchise record. She also made four three-pointers, increasing her rookie record to 111 for the season.
Clark’s standout performance highlighted a night where the last three WNBA No. 1 draft picks shined. 2023 top pick Aliyah Boston led the Fever with a career-high 30 points and 13 rebounds, while the Dream’s Rhyne Howard, selected first in 2022, scored 36 points.
Despite facing challenges during the game, with 12 turnovers at halftime compared to Atlanta’s one, the Fever staged a remarkable comeback. Trailing by 16 points in the third quarter, Indiana rallied with an 18-5 run to cut the deficit to three heading into the final period.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Atlanta extended their lead to nine, but Indiana fought back once more. A Boston layup off Clark’s 10th assist tied the game at 90 with 18 seconds remaining, forcing the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Fever took control and secured the win. Two clutch free throws from Clark sealed the victory and pushed Indiana’s record to 19-17 for the season.
Clark expressed gratitude for her team’s effort postgame, citing the crowd’s support as a key factor in their success.
The Fever clinched a playoff berth on September 3, making their first postseason appearance since 2016.
Boston emphasized the team’s confidence and resilience, noting that they have the ability to compete against any opponent due to their playing style and talent.
