Being compared to Maya Moore is a compliment that should not be taken lightly. The greatest winner in women’s basketball history has some weightage to her name. Even Caitlin Clark, with all her stardom, went viral for sharing a ten second conversation she had with her idol, and how it changed the trajectory of her life. After an impressive college career, fans and analysts alike began comparing the two nonstop. However, there might be another rising star that deserves that honor.

JuJu Watkins is balling out in USC, and is the front-runner for NPOY honors this year. The six-two point guard has been putting in insane efforts on both ends of the court. Her averages of over 24 points per game have her leading the Big Ten in scoring, while coming top-5 nationally in steals and blocks. After such an incredible year with the Trojans, the Watkins craze is running high!

The crescendo has peaked with the best comparison a sophomore in college could receive. “I had a WNBA GM compare JuJu Watkins to Maya Moore. Which is extremely incredible when it comes to a compliment for a player.” National reporter Andraya Carter said, while talking about the USC superstar.

Watkins’ accomplishments so far in her collegiate career really do drive home the comparisons. To take your team to the Elite Eight in your freshman year, and to have a 51 point game, is a sign of greatness. That is not to say that Caitlin Clark is any lesser of a player, but that the comparisons between JuJu Watkins and Maya Moore aren’t unwarranted. They are both winners.

Caitlin Clark, although sidelined in this discussion, is probably the biggest Maya Moore fan in professional basketball. Her story of running up to the WNBA legend has been told and will be told for years to come. Mostly by her. However, it was a very wholesome scene when the two finally got to meet properly during CC’s college days.

Caitlin Clark’s fangirl reaction over Moore, a throwback to Iowa days

By her senior year, Caitlin Clark had gained the title of being the best basketball player in college. She had her rivalries, and she had her matchups, but the performances she had put up were second to none. However, Caitlin Clark jumped and squealed like she was 5 years old again when she got the chance to meet her idol.

On the March 3rd, 2024, almost exactly a year ago, ESPN and Elle Duncan got an opportunity to create a lifelong memory for the Iowa star. During an unassuming interview, Duncan surprised Caitlin Clark with her long-time idol and inspiration, Maya Moore.

“I feel like I’m fangirling so hard right now,” Clark said after letting out a shrill squeal. The two hugged and had an amazing connection off the bat. CC recalled the time she first met the former WNBA superstar, to which she admitted that she doesn’t have an exact recollection.

Caitlin Clark, however, was not offended at all. She let out a little chuckle before explaining. “Everybody was doing it to her, cause she was so famous!” The light in her eyes could not be dimmed, it was definitely one of the happiest moments in CC’s life.
