Caitlin Clark made history in the WNBA as she broke the rookie record for assists in a season during the Indiana Fever’s victory over the Seattle Storm with a score of 92–75 on Sunday. Ticha Penicheiro had previously set the record in 1998.
However, in the same game, something happened that could impact the Fever’s remaining 12 games of the regular season. Clark received a technical foul in the third quarter for hitting the backstop in frustration after missing a 3-pointer.
While the call was debatable, as Clark’s actions were emotional but not directed at another player or referee, it marked her fifth technical foul of the season, bringing her closer to an automatic suspension.
In the WNBA, a player faces a one-game suspension after accumulating seven technical fouls in a season. Additional suspensions are issued for every odd-numbered technical received after that.
Following the game, Clark explained that the referee deemed her outburst “disrespectful to the game of basketball.” She acknowledged her emotions but stated it was driven by personal frustration and competitiveness, not aimed at anyone else.

“But I think he fired me up to continue to play a lot harder,” Clark added. “I think we got a lot better after he did that. So I want to thank him for that.”
Despite Seattle narrowing the gap to one point by the end of the third quarter, the Fever managed to pull ahead and secure a 14-point victory with six minutes left in the game.
With a record of 13–15, the Fever currently hold the seventh spot in the WNBA, positioning them for a playoff berth. However, if Clark is sidelined for any of the remaining games, it could jeopardize their chances.
Clark leads the Fever in scoring, assists, steals, and is the third-leading rebounder. Losing her production for a game, especially crucial ones as the regular season winds down, could prove costly for the team.
