Caitlin Clark received huge honor due to her impact on women’s sports
Caitlin Clark was named the AP Female Athlete of the Year in recognition of her contributions to women’s sports. During her debut season in the WNBA, Clark received numerous awards both on and off the court. Recently, she was named TIME Magazine’s 2024 Athlete of the Year.
When accepting the award, Clark expressed gratitude to the athletes who paved the way for her, naming former WNBA player Candace Parker as a significant influence on her basketball career.
“I grew up a fan of Candace Parker and the people who came before me and to be honored in this way, is super special and I’m thankful,” Clark said. “It was a great year for women’s basketball and women’s sports.”
Clark is the fourth basketball player to receive this award, following Sheryl Swoopes (1993), Rebecca Lobo (1995), and Candace Parker (2008, 2021).
Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and boxer Imane Khelif were also contenders for the award. Khelif finished third in the voting, while Biles came in second.
In 2024, Clark led Iowa to the national championship game before becoming the top pick in the WNBA Draft. In her rookie season with the Fever, she averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists, earning her Rookie of the Year honors and a spot on the All-WNBA First Team.
