The women’s basketball community has been abuzz in recent days following comments from several prominent WNBA members regarding the increased visibility of racism and bigotry online and on social media within the sport this season.
Notable figures who have spoken out include Sun coach Stephanie White, Sun star forward Alyssa Thomas, Mercury forward Brittney Griner, Chicago Sky sensation Angel Reese, and Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides.
It is widely believed that many of these racist fans are supporters (or claim to be) of Caitlin Clark, making her potential impact in addressing this issue significant.
During her end-of-season exit interview on Friday, the rookie did not shy away from discussing the topic when asked about it.
Responding to concerns raised by her peers and coaches regarding racist fan behavior, Clark stated: “It’s definitely upsetting. I don’t think anyone in our league should face racism, hurtful comments, or threats.”
Clark continued, “Those aren’t fans, they’re trolls. It’s unfair to the genuine people in our league and the WNBA. However, there are many supportive fans, both long-time followers and newcomers. Promoting the league in a positive light is crucial.”
She concluded, “There are incredible players, teams, and stories in this league. Continuing to represent it positively is vital.”
Only time will tell if Clark’s message will impact these trolls and their presence in the online women’s basketball community.
