The omission of Caitlin Clark from the Team USA women’s basketball roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics sparked intense debate when the roster was announced in June. The discussion only heightened as Clark’s performance during her rookie season with the WNBA’s Indiana Fever improved significantly.
On the eve of Team USA’s opening game at the Olympics against Japan, there are signs that there may be some regret regarding the controversial decision.
During an appearance on NBC as part of the network’s basketball coverage at the Games, South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, who was on the selection committee for the Team USA roster, suggested that Clark would have been strongly considered for the team if given another opportunity.
Staley explained, “As a committee member, you’re tasked with assembling the most talented team. Caitlin is a rookie in the WNBA and wasn’t playing at the level she is now.”
When the Team USA roster was announced on June 11, Clark was still early in her WNBA career. Despite some struggles in her early games, she has since shown significant improvement, leading the league in assists per game and making a strong impact during the WNBA All-Star Game.
Staley praised Clark’s growth, stating, “She’s playing at a high level – shooting well, passing exceptionally, and showing great basketball IQ. She has adapted well to the professional game.”
