Caitlin Clark’s teammate at the Indiana Fever, Erica Wheeler, found it amusing when JuJu Watkins made a reference to Shaquille O’Neal during an interview. In a clip shared by ESPN on Instagram, Watkins used O’Neal’s famous catchphrase.
Wheeler, Clark’s teammate, shared her reaction in the comments section with three laughing emojis to show her amusement over Watkins’ words.
During the interview, Watkins discussed her strategy of adapting to the game and her opponents.
“Most of the time, I use that first quarter to survey what the defense is doing and try to read the defense to the best of my ability,” Watkins said. “Once I get a hang of it, it’s ‘barbeque chicken!'”
O’Neal has previously explained the meaning behind his catchphrase “barbeque chicken.” In a clip posted by Overtime on YouTube on Nov. 13, 2023, O’Neal revealed the significance of the phrase.
“Barbeque chicken is a tasty, delightful meal, right?” O’Neal said. “So when I see somebody that really can’t check me which is everybody, I am about to eat their a** up. I am about to eat them up real quick like some barbeque chicken,”
Watkins is having an outstanding season with averages of 25.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
JuJu Watkins is poised to break Caitlin Clark’s NCAA scoring record
As Paige Bueckers prepares to enter the WNBA, fans are turning their attention to JuJu Watkins. The USC Trojans guard has been a standout performer this season and ranks among the top scorers in the NCAA.
Caitlin Clark had a remarkable college basketball career, setting the record for the most points scored in NCAA women’s basketball with 3,951 points during her time at the Iowa Hawkeyes. Despite not winning an NCAA championship, she established herself as one of the greatest collegiate players.
Watkins, however, is on track to surpass that record. The USC Trojans recently celebrated her achievement of becoming the fastest player to reach 1,000 points in team history, accomplishing this milestone in just 38 games.
