Calvin Kattar vs. Youseff Zalal: Odds, full fight preview and prediction | UFC Vegas 102

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight standouts Calvin Kattar vs. Youssef Zalal will go to war this weekend (Sat., Feb. 15, 2025) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC Vegas 102.

Not terribly long ago, Kattar was closing in on a title shot and expected to challenge Alexander Volkanovski. A couple years later, the boxer has lost three in a row. While he’s not losing to scrubs — a Murderer’s Row of Josh Emmett, Arnold Allen and Aljamain Sterling to be specific — the simple fact here is that “The Boston Finisher” hasn’t won a fight since Jan. 2022.

Zalal, conversely, is riding a major wave of momentum into this opportunity to break into the Top 15. “The Moroccan Devil” rejoined UFC’s roster last year and made up for lost time, winning three fights via a trio of impressive strangulations. At 28 years of age, Zalal has really come into his own and will be looking to make a statement here.

How Kattar Wins

Man, those odds are disrespectful to Kattar’s skills and accomplishments. The 36-year-old veteran is a tremendous boxer with one of the division’s best jabs, one often followed up by a sledgehammer of a right hand. I know “Funkmaster” made it look easy, but generally, his defensive wrestling and grappling have held up very well.

This is going to be a battle of distance. Zalal is rangy and crafty from the back foot, the more varied striker. Kattar is the heavier hitter and sharper in the pocket, but he’s going to have to close distance without being countered or wrestled in order to find success in that range.

For Kattar, the name of the game is first and third. He cannot let a quick young fighter like Zalal constantly be initiating; that’s a recipe for getting outpointed. By feinting actively himself and working behind his jab, Kattar should be able to get a read on what Zalal is trying to walk him into. Ideally, he can block or slip those counters, but even if they land, the goal is to follow up with another combination to keep his opponent defensive and behind on the numbers game.

How Zalal Wins

Zalal showed some promise in his first UFC stint during the early empty Apex days, and his overall game remains similar: fluid movement, good kickboxing, well-timed takedowns. The difference is that Zalal is hurting people now, really taking the initiative and doing damage in a much more consistent fashion.

It feels reduction to say Zalal should simply kick the crap out of the boxer’s lead leg, but … he definitely should! We’ve seen Kattar struggle with low kicks previously (against Renato Moicano, for example), and he’s going to be marching forward behind that lead hand. If Zalal can take away the base of Kattar to any extent, his speed advantage will be even more pronounced.

Generally, the key here for Zalal is to mix the martial arts and avoid a boxing match. Feints will help control the fights rhythm, but he can prevent Kattar from getting his offense going by continually reseting his foe with well-timed kicks, intercepting knees, takedown attempts, and even stiff jabs of his own.

Kattar vs. Zalal Prediction

It’s hard to know where Kattar stands right now after injuring his knee and losing three straight. At his peak, Kattar had the crisp boxing necessary to get through Zalal’s preferred range and do damage. Nowadays, I’m not sure that ability to cover distance remains.

Even if Kattar remains sharp, there’s also the simple fact that Zalal is fighting really well right now. He has the skills to trouble any version of Kattar, and he seems to really understand how he wins fights. Not only can he potentially out-slick Kattar, but now there’s a real chance he hurts him as well.

It’s hard to go against the peaking talent.
