Every Thursday here at FightHype, we reserve a space for a written piece from my sack of truth. This week, we discuss Shakur Stevson’s free agency, Canelo-Berlanga/Charlo, Tyson Fury after Usyk, and Terence Crawford.
Shakur Stevenson, Free Agent?
Hi Paul.
I’ve heard that Shakur Stevenson will become a free agent after his upcoming fight. The market may not be favorable for him due to his lack of fan-friendly fights. Options seem limited, with potential interest from Eddie Hearn. However, his future remains uncertain. What do you think lies ahead for Shakur? Will he re-sign with Top Rank?
— Luis
Hey Luis.
Shakur’s timing for free agency isn’t ideal, but there are potential big fights if he explores the open market. Possibilities include a bout with Tank Davis or fights with Top Rank or Golden Boy. Mayweather Promotions could be another contender for Shakur. Moving up to 140 may provide more options, but it’s uncertain if he’ll take that route. Free agency opens doors, but his next steps remain unclear.
Fury’s Plans in a Post-Usyk World
Paul.
With Usyk vacating the IBF belt, Fury’s plans may change. An immediate rematch with Joshua-Dubois winner could be in the cards. Fury’s next moves depend on his mindset. A blockbuster fight with Joshua is likely, with a target date of Summer 2025. Usyk may be left out despite his accomplishments, highlighting boxing’s focus on star power.
Canelo’s Fighting Who?
Magno.
Recent rumors suggest Canelo may face Berlanga or Charlo next. Benavidez is a more logical opponent, but Canelo’s decisions remain uncertain. It’s unclear if a fight with Berlanga or Charlo would appeal to fans. Canelo’s career direction is under scrutiny, with doubts about his fight choices.
Terence Crawford, Losing Respect?
Hi Paul.
Terence Crawford’s recent fight decisions have disappointed fans. Avoiding tough opponents like Boots Ennis shows a shift in mentality. Prizefighting is all about money, and Crawford’s choices reflect this reality. It’s ironic how he’s now in the position others were in years ago, but it’s a common trend in boxing. Business and leverage play a significant role in fighters’ career paths.
