Canyon Endurace AllRoad affordable entry-level all-road bike

The newest affordable aluminum all-road bike in Canyon’s drop bar lineup is both an entry-level road bike and an entry-level gravel bike at once. They call it the “ideal first road bike” – whether for people completely new to cycling or those who come to drop bars from only having ridden mountain bikes. The goal was a solid new drop bar bike that people could actually afford.

With just one smart Shimano Cues 2×10-speed and a broad 7-size range, Canyon managed to keep the cost just under one thousand euros without any big spec or performance compromises. And they promise they’ve made a bunch this time around, so it’s not likely to sell out right away.

Why an all-road all-rounder vs. a proper gravel bike?

With an endurance road bike name but wider tire clearance, I was a bit curious where the new Endurace AllRoad really fits into Canyon’s lineup. Officially, the new Endurace AllRoad AL is the successor to the 2018 alloy Grail AL that was so popular that Canyon had a hard time keeping that bike in stock. That ‘gravel’ bike essentially had the same tire clearance as this new ‘all-road’ bike.

But now calling something gravel really means it needs room for much bigger tires, and Canyon wanted a do-it-all dropbar bike for the update, since it’ll possibly be both the first road bike or first gravel bike for a lot of buyers.

But Canyon says 35-40% of all drop bar bikes they sell are already aluminum. So this might just bump that up to even higher numbers by attracting more potential dropbar cyclists.

So they kept clearance that will still fit 40mm gravel race tires if you want. While still giving the bike more classic endurance geometry that will still feel quick on the road but plenty stable on dirt & gravel roads, too.

Start with the stock fast-rolling Schwalbe G-One Comp file tread tires to figure out where you want to ride. And you can always upgrade to faster-rolling wide road slicks like the new 35mm or 40mm Pirelli Cinturato Evo if you end up sticking to the road. Or something like the excellent new 40mm Schwalbe G-One RX if you want off-road ready knobs.

Plus, the stock Alex rims are already tubeless-ready, so you’ll just need valves, tape & sealant if you want to go that route down the road.
