Carlos Prates Discusses His Next UFC Opponent

What Might Have Been

In the aftermath of the intense bout between welterweight contenders Ian Machado Garry and Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 last Saturday, another up-and-coming UFC fighter in the 170lb division has come forward with an interesting revelation. Carlos Prates, who has been making waves in the UFC rankings, disclosed that he was given the opportunity to step in for Rakhmonov’s original opponent, Belal Muhammad.

Prates has been on a remarkable winning streak since his debut on Dana White’s Contender Series in August of 2023. With four consecutive victories inside the Octagon, all ending in finishes, “The Nightmare” has gained recognition for his outstanding striking abilities and knockout power. His recent first-round KO victory over Neil Magny propelled him into the welterweight rankings, but he had to decline the chance to fight Rakhmonov due to a foot injury sustained during training.

The Vale Top Team representative explained to Submission Radio that despite his eagerness to take the fight, his broken foot required him to prioritize his health and recovery, prompting the UFC to advise him to wait until next year to compete again.

What Next For “The Nightmare?”

Prates has been dominant in his UFC performances in 2024, defeating notable opponents like Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, Li Jingliang, and Magny. With calls for him to face tougher competition, the #13-ranked Brazilian is looking forward to challenging himself against top contenders in the welterweight division once he heals from his injury.

Expressing interest in potential matchups, Prates mentioned the possibility of facing Jack Della Maddalena or Jorge Masvidal, acknowledging the significance of each fight for his career. While contemplating his next move with his manager, he is open to whatever opportunities the UFC presents to him.

Notably, former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman also turned down the opportunity to fight Rakhmonov on short notice. When asked about the possibility of facing Usman in the future, Prates hinted at the likelihood of Usman fighting Della Maddalena next, suggesting that their paths may cross at a later time.
