The UFC matchmakers have been on a roll since Conor McGregor withdrew from his fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303. After successfully securing new main and co-main events, their next task is to either reschedule the original headliner or find a replacement opponent for Chandler.
Chandler last competed in November 2022, and with McGregor’s absence, he may be considering other options. He recently hinted at a potential fight with Islam Makhachev, but doubts linger due to the challenger’s inactivity and record.
Chael Sonnen would support Chandler fighting for the UFC lightweight championship. However, he also expects other fighters in the promotion to make a case for themselves.
Sonnen Lists Exciting Matchups For Islam Makhachev, Including Max Holloway & Charles Oliveira
“The American Gangster” discussed the possibility of Makhachev vs. Chandler in a video on his official YouTube channel. He advised Chandler to accept the fight without hesitation and encouraged other fighters to take advantage of the current lack of contenders in the 155-pound division.
Arman Tsarukyan is suspended until October for punching a fan at UFC 300. With a victory over Oliveira on the same night, he appears to be the only clear contender in the division.
“This perfect storm, if you will, has created an opportunity, especially since no other 155-pounder seems to have an issue with it,” Sonnen said.
“That would be a great example. Max, as the BMF champ, challenging Islam or getting in Chandler’s way, would be one of the many potential examples,” Sonnen added.
The BMF champ showcased his skills against Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 with an iconic last-second KO. Sonnen believes “Do Bronx” is still in the title picture following his close split decision loss to Tsarukyan.
“Charles Oliveira, coming off a loss, like Chandler, was in a tight match with Tsarukyan. Someone out there would love to see Charles Oliveira face Islam. It’s a great opportunity for Charles to step up,” Sonnen emphasized.
Makhachev has also expressed interest in challenging Leon Edwards for the UFC welterweight championship.
