Rome, Ga. – On the final day of competition at the ITA Conference Masters Championships, the singles and doubles champions were crowned, while the final NCAA Doubles Championship berths were determined through the third-place match on Sunday.
In singles, it was Sebastian Dominko (Notre Dame, ACC) and Sofia Johnson (Old Dominion, SBC) who were crowned ITA Conference Masters Singles Champions. Both were preseason Top-50 ranked players in the ITA Division I Singles Rankings and had already earned NCAA Singles Championship berths by virtue of reaching the semifinals at the ITA Conference Masters Championships.
For Dominko, who faced Tiago Silva (Pacific) in the final, he continued his strong week in Rome by capping off his title run with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in today’s final. The junior from Slovenia is a three-time ITA All-American and will make his return to the NCAA Singles Championship this fall, a tournament he first appeared in as a freshman two years ago.
Meanwhile, for Johnson, she was finally able to get over the hump and qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship earlier this week in Rome and seemed determined to keep the momentum rolling over her final two matches, beating Gracie Epps (Oklahoma State) 6-3, 6-4 in today’s championship match. Johnson is coming off of a season in which she was an ITA Singles All-American and the Sun Belt Conference Payer of the Year. This will be her second NCAA Singles Championship appearance and third overall NCAA Individual Championship appearance of her career.
Moving into the afternoon and into doubles play, it was Jovanovic/Sanchez Martinez (Mississippi State) who were crowned champions after a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Dominko/Nad (Notre Dame) in the championship match. The duo, who ranked No. 1 in the ITA Preseason Doubles Rankings, finally punched their ticket to the NCAA Doubles Championship yesterday as they look to make another deep run as a pairing, similar to this past spring.
Women’s doubles saw Dada-Mascoll/Romanichen (App State) beat Owen/Nugent (Xavier (OH)) 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match. The duo had already cemented their place in the NCAA Individual Championships but capped off their impressive four days of play by bringing two championship trophies back to Appalachian State, making it a clean sweep for the Sun Belt Conference in the women’s finals.
In the third-place doubles matches, the final two NCAA Doubles Championship berths were won on the women’s side by Mohr/Webster (Vanderbilt, SEC) and on the men’s side by Iturbe/Prata (UNC Charlotte, AAC). These two doubles teams will now head to Waco where they will join both of the ITA Conference Masters Doubles Finalists, as well as the other qualifiers from various other fall qualifying pathways.
The NCAA Individual Championships are set to get underway on November 19th from the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Selections will be released tomorrow, Monday, November 11th, while the brackets will be announced on Saturday, November 16th on the NCAA website.
