Cary, NC – The 2024 ITA Women’s All-American Championship Singles and Doubles Champions have now been crowned as Maria Sholokhova (Wisconsin) earned the singles title, while Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo (NC State) claimed the doubles title.
In a matchup with Elza Tomase (Tennessee) that proved to be a historic matchup between both players, it was Sholokhova who had the upper hand in Sunday’s matchup winning 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match. For both players, this championship appearance marked the first by a player from either program, and Sholokhova’s win marked the first time a Big Ten player has won the singles title since Francesca Di Lorenzo (Ohio State) did so in 2016.
Knocking off many highly-touted opponents en route to the title, Sholokhova becomes the first ITA All-American Singles Champion to be coached by a former All-American Singles Champion as Wisconsin Head Coach Kelcy McKenna (Arizona State) won the championship in 2008 over Fani Chifchieva (Auburn).
Outside of the singles main draw final, four players were still battling it out in the singles consolation draw as they looked to claim the final to qualifying spots into the NCAA Individual Championships. Battling it out in a feed-in consolation draw which started after the first round of main draw play, Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M), Dasha Vidmanova (Georgia), Julia Fliegner (Michigan), and Sofia Johnson (Old Dominion) all looked to end their time in Cary on a high note.
After two exciting matches, it was Stoiana and Vidmanova coming out with the victories and the qualifying spots for the fall individual championships. As the two top-seeded players in the women’s draw, Stoiana and Vidmanova had to work a little harder to earn their place in Waco but ultimately achieved their goals on Sunday with definitive wins in the consolation draw.
In the doubles final it was Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo (NC State) who took down Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle (UCLA) in a 6-4, 6-4 effort. The duo became the second team from NC State to take home the All-American Doubles Championship in the past three years, joining Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki who won the title two years ago.
The pairing, who started in the qualifying draw, had to win seven matches to take home the title. As two sophomores for the Wolfpack, the road to the finals saw the pairing take down six Top 50 opponents, including three teams that rank in the Top 20 of the ITA Preseason Rankings.
In the consolation doubles final, Amelia Honer and Anna-Marie Weissheim (UCSB) defeated Julia Garcia Ruiz and Chloe Noel (Oklahoma) 6-2, 6-4 to be crown consolation champions. The pairing won four straight matches after dropping their opening round main draw match en route to the title.
