MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Freshman Addie Chapman scored her first goal of the year, and it turned out to be one of the Lee University women’s soccer team’s most important scores of the season in a 1-0 victory over host University of Montevallo on Wednesday evening. The win improved the Lady Flames record to 4-1-2 in GSC play and 4-3-4 overall. The Falcons suffered only their second league defeat (6-2) and 8-3-1 overall.
After the physical and rugged battle, Lee will get some time off before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 25 hosting Delta State in another GSC contest. They will turn right around and return to the Ray Conn Sports Complex on Sunday, Oct. 27 testing Mississippi College.
Because of traffic problems on the way down to Montevallo, Wednesday’s game was delayed for over an hour, but that did not seem to hamper the determined play of the Lady Flames. Nora Burton, Katie Wilson, Avery Sides, Whitney Carrigan, and Jordan Blair played the entire 90 minutes and turned in outstanding defensive efforts while Ashley Eulo and Grace Berry also gave the team the efforts needed to preserve the win.
After Chapman’s goal at the 50:12 mark in the second half, the Falcons looked like a different team as they came charging back at the Lady Flames. Lee was credited with four shots on goal which were fired by Eulo, Burton, Carrigan, and Chapman. Falcon keeper Emily Hounsell got credit for three saves.
On the other hand, Montevallo was listed as taking 20 shots and three were on goal. Lee keeper Abby Whitcomb was there to stop all three shots, but the biggest by far came in the 75th minute when she went flying through the air to block a shot by the Falcons.
The Lady Flames had five shots in each half for a total of 10. Montevallo had six shots in the opening 45 minutes, but came fighting back and fired 14 shots in the second half. Lee had four corner kicks. The outplayed Falcons did not have a corner kick in the opening half but came back with six in the second 45. Lee was charged with eight fouls and Montevallo 11. There were no yellow cards issued.
Coach Lee Hughes’ thoughts:
“We dominated the first half and played some good stuff. In the second, we had to dig in. I was happy we went through that and had to show some resolve! We are happy with the result but are not satisfied.”
“Again, we are going to continue to be better every day and that starts tomorrow!”
