Following their inclusion in the Best XI First Team earlier this week, Temwa Chawinga of Kansas City, Croix Bethune of Washington, and Emily Sams of Orlando continued to rack up awards in the 2024 NWSL season.
Chawinga was crowned the 2024 MVP on Friday, adding another accolade to her impressive resume just a day after Bethune and Sams received awards for their respective positions.
A remarkable debut season for KC’s Chawinga
In her first season in the NWSL, Chawinga made a huge impact by scoring 20 goals and breaking the single-season scoring record previously held by Sam Kerr. She also became the only player to score against all teams in a single season, earning her the Golden Boot for 2024.
Chawinga showcased her ability to capitalize on opportunities by leading the league in shots on target, with 18 of her 20 goals coming from inside the 18-yard box. Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski praised her performance and named her the clear MVP of both the team and the league.
Bethune’s outstanding debut as an NWSL rookie
After a stellar season with Orlando, Sams was recognized as the Defender of the Year for her exceptional contributions to the team’s defensive record. She led the Pride in clearances, blocks, and possessions in the defensive third, helping the team achieve 13 shutouts and the fewest goals conceded in the league. Sams humbly attributed her success to her teammates and expressed gratitude for their support throughout the season. She is now focused on helping Orlando secure a victory in the upcoming NWSL Championship match against Washington.
