Chelsea midfielder Sophie Ingle has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
The Blues announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.
It has been reported that Ingle sustained the injury during Chelsea’s pre-season friendly fixture against Feyenoord at Kingsmeadow on Saturday 7 September 2024. The 33-year-old Welsh international midfielder came off the bench to play the second half but she went off injured with 15 minutes of the match left to play. Chelsea went on to record a 9-0 victory over their Dutch opponents.
Ingle’s injury was assessed by the Chelsea medical team along with a knee specialist and it was confirmed that she has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). The player will now undergo surgery before beginning a lengthy period of rehabilitation. Ingle is not expected to return to competitive action before the end of this season.
News of Ingle’s injury is a real blow for Chelsea who kick-off their Barclays Women’s Super League title defence this weekend. The Blues begin the 2024/2025 campaign with a fixture against Robert de Pauw’s new-look Aston Villa side at Kingsmeadow on Friday night. Ingle will be needed to use her experience off the field in the coming weeks and months.
